View Full Version : Got a Question
I want to change my Company name, but I want to know what i need to expect when I do??
As far as legally - just register a DBA name. Then you won't need to go through the whole setup thing.
As far as marketing - it can be tricky. You want your current customers to know that you are the same company just with a different name. Probably the best way to deal with that is to send a letter explaining what's going on and reasons why you are doing it. And then look ahead a little and start putting together your portfolio with company name beneath it - so if people call one of your old customers they'll see it was designed and built under the previous name. There will be less confusion with new and old customers then.
Thanks Rich, I was thinking along the same lines.

I have to agree with everything Rich said with the acception of the DBA. Doing a DBA is an option but I am not sure why you wouldn't just change the name. If you are incorporated all it takes is a name change with the state. Usually $25.00 and one form. I did exactly that in August. I had already formed a corporation for another business so instead of doing another one I just changed the name to Rocky Mountain Custom Home Improvements, Inc and away I went.
It could be a mess if you just do a DBA and 10 years down the road you will be kicking yourself for not just changing it 10 years ago. One change and you are done, no issues later. Something to think about either way you go.
I guess I only mention the DBA to save "immediate" time. But good point on the X years down the road PITA.
